Moneris is Canada's largest payment processor — roughly one in three Canadian transactions runs through it — and the strongest Canadian option for businesses that need Interac, in-person POS, and Canadian acquiring with next-day settlement. It is Canadian-owned today (a 50/50 RBC–BMO joint venture since 2000), but that is about to change: RBC and BMO have agreed to sell Moneris to US private-equity firm Francisco Partners for ~C$2B, with closing expected by January 2027 (announced 2026-08-10; re-verified still pending 2026-10-10). Moneris says its infrastructure is resident in Canada, but its privacy policy allows personal data to be processed in the US, UK, EU, India, or the Philippines. As a Stripe replacement it fully covers standard ecommerce and in-person payments and beats Stripe on Interac — but it has no webhooks, no metered billing, and no self-serve equivalent of Stripe Connect for marketplaces.

    What they offer

    • Ecommerce checkout

Flat-rate online acceptance (2.85% + $0.30) or negotiated interchange-plus, with REST API, tokenization vault, and 3-D Secure.

    • Interac and pay-by-bank

Interac Debit card-present, Flash, and online, plus Konek pay-by-bank (Interac account-to-account) — stronger Canadian rails than Stripe.

    • POS and in-person payments

Moneris Go terminals with on-site field services across Canada.

    • Recurring billing

Fixed-amount, fixed-interval recurring billing and stored payment methods via the Vault and recurring-billing API.

    What it replaces

Where the fit is imperfect, we say so. A substitution that quietly drops a capability you depend on isn’t a saving.
